The cost base changes the maths
Rent, salaries and warehousing outside the metros run far cheaper, which buys a company something more valuable than margin: time. Founders can take three years to find product-market fit instead of eighteen months.
People stay
Attrition is the quiet advantage. In cities with one large employer rather than fifty, a good job is worth keeping, and teams that stay together for five years make fewer of the same mistakes twice.
Where it gets hard
Senior hiring is the wall almost everyone hits. A first-time head of finance or a serious engineering lead usually has to be persuaded to relocate, and the ones who agree tend to want equity rather than salary.
What travels and what does not
Manufacturing, logistics and customer operations work well outside the metros. Fundraising and enterprise sales still mostly do not, which is why many of these founders keep a small city presence rather than moving.
