Subtitles changed the market
Once audiences got comfortable reading subtitles for foreign shows, they applied the same habit to Indian languages. A Malayalam thriller now finds viewers in Delhi who would never have watched a dubbed version.
The budget gap is the advantage
Regional originals cost a fraction of a flagship Hindi series, so a platform can commission several and survive the ones that fail. That tolerance for failure is exactly what produces the occasional breakout.
What travels
Genre pieces travel best. Thrillers, procedurals and horror cross language easily; comedy and social satire rarely do, because the jokes are local by construction.
Where it strains
Crew depth is the limit. The same small group of cinematographers and editors is booked across every production, and schedules are starting to collide.
